Keiki with long straight out roots

$

So I decided to cut this keiki from the mother plant and put it in it's own pot, she has 3 roots, which I'm hoping will be enough.

The thing is that the mother plant (I got it from an old lady) is in a really poor condition, it's got crown rot and only has one short root left. However it had 2 keikis, the one I just mentioned with 3 roots and a small one with no roots. I made the decision to separate the one with the roots in order to encourage the smaller one to grow it's own roots too. Anyway that has succeeded well, it's got two small roots all ready I'm going to let it grow bigger and hopefully more roots.

Back to the first keiki, the one I repotted. So this is a couple of weeks back already. The thing is that the 3 roots it's got are straight out, I mean horizontally when you try to put it in a pot. Besides the roots are so long that the "normal" sized pot, well... it just doesn't fit. I also don't want to place a small keiki in a huge pot
So I had to improvise and use something I could find that was a bit wider, I made holes in it for ventilation, and yet the roots literally stick straight out on the sides of the pot.

Now the thing is that I've got it sitting on bark, but I'm afraid that it will not retain much moisture and I don't want it's roots to dry out. Also there's no point in watering the entire pot and bark mix since there are no roots in it. So what I've done is that I've put a little bit of spaghnum moss sort of around and on top of the roots.

How to water it? What I've been doing is that I've been spraying it on top with just water once a day. (I'm very careful not to get any water in the crown of the leaves.) The air in my house though is rather dry to be honest, and I do notice by the end of the day when I get home the spaghnum is completely dry. Is the spraying once a day enough do you think?

Also I've noticed that the root tips have started to dry out.

Is there anything I can do to promote more root growth on this one? Hopefully the roots will grow into the medium, that would be nice. :)

Haraella retrocalla potting?

$

Hi guys, I'm pretty much a orchid newbie with only the common orchid from the grocery store until recently. I've been doing alot of research though.
I recently purchased this orchid, Haraella retrocalla, in a jar. With expectations it would live 6 months+ before I had to repot it. Plenty time to learn. Well it came to me with mold on the gel stuff so it needs to come out. Please be kind I'm trying what I can for the plant. I want to pot it because I know pots, nothing about mounting and dont want to water constantly. I know it needs high humidity and I already got a fine orchid poxing mix and added moss to it. I reused the glass jar with little rocks about an inch deep at the bottom, excess water can drain into the rocks, with potting mix and plant on top with the leaves just poking out the top. I was thinking this would keep the humidity up. But now I'm thinking this will not allow enough air flow and the soil will be too damp. The humidity in my house is around 50ish%. Any advice?

I'm thinking I might have too much "soil" for lack of a better word. It's about an inch and a half. But it seemed like what I needed to cover the roots. I can post a picture later. I'm also thinking I'm over thinking all of this and I should just put it in a pot and water it every few days.

Is this a proper hybrid name?

I got super lucky and picked this fragrant phalaenopsis at a hardware store today.. A total of ten spikes on two plants in the pot!

I've emailed the nursery on the label and they gave me the name "Pandoli" - as shown here Pandoli-Brighten Floriculture

It's literally the only place where I can find it on the internet.

Does this count as a proper hybrid ID? Or should I still call it a NOID?

Please critique my setup!

Hello all!

After a long sabbatical of growing orchids due to a big move, I decided to purchase a huge haul of orchids to replenish my collection. Now here I am with a cluster of various orchids at a single southeast-facing window and I'm super excited. I am fairly confident I have done enough research and have enough experience to at least keep my orchids alive, but I want to ask everybody here what I should change to make them thrive.

I put the sun-loving orchids (catasetum & vanda) right next to the window. I have the medium light-lovers (baellara & oncidium) 1 row behind, and finally my phal. in the back. I do have another little table I could utilize, but just haven't gotten around to it.

I use MSU fertilizer, Better-gro bloom booster, and Kelpmax.
Humidity ranges from 61-57%
Temp ranges from 79-73F (day & night respectively)

One area of concern are my vandas. I understand that they need tons of sun in order to bloom again. Even though they are right in front of a southeast-facing window, I fear that they might not have enough sun. The reason I say this is because the lip of the roof tends to block a lot of the mid-morning and afternoon sun.
Should I invest in a supplemental growth light?
I was thinking about using THESE lights if I had to.

What else would you experts change about my setup?

Please and Thank you!

Help, miltonias make no sense!

Ok, so I aquired a miltonia on Sunday, so far it has had minor accordion leaves since Monday, while I water it once a day. I tried recreating rain assuming I'm under watering by misting and now it has black spots on its under leaves. So far in the few days I've had it I was required to repot (roots coming out of the bottom) in bettergrow orchid potting bark, and all the flower bulbs have bloomed (Tuesday). I called the botanical garden I got it from just told me if I don't like it bring it back and she has no idea how much they watered them or why there are now black spots. So I called a few florists and they told me I'm over watering, but they've never heard of miltonias. I really don't want this beautiful plant to perish, please help!

Oncidium Heaven Scent repot?

$

I was wondering if it's time to repot this plant. I was going to leave it for a while, since it looks like it still has room in the pot to grow, but I'm noticing new root tips now (and I know that's a good time to repot) and I see these other new roots growing out of the pot. Does that mean I need to repot it? Thanks!

Darwinara Charm Blue Star care questions

$

I have a darwinara charm Blue star that I purchased about two years ago as a smaller but healthy plant. It grew one leaf but then seems to have frozen. The root tips seem to be growing but the plant overall looks kind of the same as It did a year ago. Its the only Neo type anything I have in my collection, so can someone tell me how to grow this thing, in case I'm missing something? I feel like I'm missing something....
Currently it's on a plant stand by a west facing window with the blinds mostly shut, and a grow light 1 foot above (the light is a new addition as of several months ago). Planted in spagnum moss in a vanda basket, trying to keep the moss moist but not soaked. Fan nearby

Rlc. Memoria Helen Brown 'Sweet Afton m. Splash'

I had been super interested in acquiring Rlc. Memoria Helen Brown 'Sweet Afton' for a very long time. I finally managed to acquire a few mature plants of 'Sweet Afton' - fingers crossed that the plants (flowers) will at least look something like the original plant (flowers) from Stewart's --- because so much mericloning had been done, and mutations have been seen. So I hope that my plants are actually 'Sweet Afton'. Chances are good - a well-known orchid nursery had these stashed for quite a long time.

While the relatively-old 'Sweet Afton' cultivar appears to be obtainable without too much effort in USA, Japan, UK, Brazil (maybe) ..... it seems hard to find here in Australia --- these days.

This attached photo is not of 'Sweet Afton'. It's a mutation from it. For the moment - it's the closest I've ever come to 'Sweet Afton'. This photo was taken by the previous owner (a well-known grower of orchids in Australia), and he very generously sold this orchid to me this year.

Will take more photos for the next flowering!

The name I am putting down isn't official. I am tagging it as Rlc. Memoria Helen Brown 'Sweet Afton m. Splash', which pays tribute to the originator and name 'Sweet Afton', and m. is for mutation occurred, and 'Splash' is for the colouring in the petals, which doesn't occur in 'Sweet Afton'.

Nice to share this photo with everybody here on orchidboard.

They are doing ok this year it has been too cool for their happiness. the flytraps really love hot water as early as possible and here in portland we have only had a few days over 80 so far this year. when it is hot in the spring they get huge. I find they do best if watered from the top and not sit in water all the time. I just use larger pots and water once or twice a week when it is hot.

Reverting Morphogenesis in neo's

$

Wondering what the incidence is of Neo's Morphogenesis reverting back to it's original growing characteristics?

Are there certain varieties that revert back easier than others?

I love the smaller sized morphs but they rarely seem to be photographed as a larger species. Is it because new growths revert back? or are the changes strictly from growing conditions?

I ask because I purchased a lovely 3 fan Mikado, with a nice central stripe and smallish wide almost lanceolate leaves. However this years new top growth is now growing narrower and longer than the original fans. Any suggestions to get it back on track? (I'll add a photo as soon as I can get it loaded)

I grow my neo's under lights, but this Mikado became rather red pigmented, so I backed it from directly under light and now leaves are growing longer. Could that be the issue??

I thought this one wasn’t going to bloom this year. This is my first ever Catasetum and about 2 months later than all my others. Smells like bell peppers!

Watering in summer months

Is it ok to water your orchids twice a week in the summer months. Im in the uk and my orchids dry out very quick.

Pot size, growth rate question

I keep reading that an orchid should be potted to allow 2 years of growth. How much would an average size Cattleya or oncidium grown in that time frame? Mine are outside in the humid southeast.

Some current & recent blooms

Here is a collection of blooms from the last 6 months and current. More to come when I have time...ugh, the orientation is off too. Anyway, first is a rather unique seedling that I started this spring, not really an orchid. There's a cattleya from Sunset Valley Orchids with its label that is in bloom right now. This is really exciting because it had a bud last fall, which turned black and never opened. I'm really happy to see an actual bloom this time! Then there's a paph which has an id but I don't have it on hand, will edit later...a NOID pink neo, and finally a NOID phal which blooms and blooms and blooms and has several basal keikis.

EDIT: The paph is Paph Acmodontum (which my mind keeps wants to turn in accommodation). The other paph I want to post is Paph Previson Fred SVO x Paph Macabre Mother Mary--it finished blooming a few months ago but now has new buds!

rotting pseudobulb on zygopetalum

My one and only zygopetalum is in dire straights. Its largest pseudobulb was rotting, and it definitely needed care ASAP. Except I didn't provide it in time.

Trigger warnings: orchid surgery, rot, sorry-looking pseudobulbs. You have been warned.

If you have any advice for me, I'd love to have it.

Would this be considered overpotted?

I have these 2 phals that were given to me and are in desperate need of repotting. My orchid pots are most towards larger orchids, maybe around 5 inches, and I was wondering these would be considered too big for these phals? The pots they are in are the disposable floppy plastic ones with no air holes or circulation and a lot of their roots have been choked out.

Hello from Sarasota, Fl

Hello everyone. I've been collecting orchids for about 30 years and have had reef aquariums even longer. I decided to try to convert an aquarium to a terrarium with an emphasis on orchids but will add other plats as well. I haven't started yet. I'm still in the research phase to gather as much info as possible before I begin. I think I'd like to start with a basic old school 55 gallon aquarium and learn with that. I'm glad I found this site. it seems very informative! Thanks and hello. Jim
