Cattleya Guttata Alba

new phal

NO air roots: Is this normal???

Two of my phals have air roots. Said roots are doing really well. I was just given another rescue phal and it has five or six air roots that have nice, green tips.

Three of my phals don't have any air roots at all. My question is, is that unusual? :scratchhead:

Slow release fertilizer and flushing

Hi all,

I'm interested in possibly taking the route of slow release fertilizer, but I'm curious how that works when we're supposed to flush orchids weekly to remove salts. How is this possible if it takes 6 to 8 weeks for fertilizer pellets to break down? Wouldn't flushing be pointless since water releases the nutrients?

Many thanks.

It's a hybrid since Hakumin states that the colored lip indicates that.

Should I use fertiliser if it gets wet

Hi.
The fertiliser I use for orchids is granular. It looks like pink salt. One packet lasts me about a year, however although it starts out dry by about half way through it’s usually got a lot of moisture in the packet. I don’t exactly know how moisture gets into the packet - but it gets quite damp.

Should I be using this, or discard it?

FWIW : the packet says it 22.2 / 3.7 / 14.0 (Npk) + trace elements and added vitamin B1 and amino acids. Made in China and sold under a local brand (Manutec). It’s from a box store so I doubt it’s high quality - but it is convenient.

I also buy a companion product which is supposed to enhance/support flowering - though I don’t much use that.

Cheers
Arron

Wondering what these beautiful orchids are, I’ve had them for about 3 weeks and the purple one is doing amazing but the white is getting kinda droopy, and complete opposite health of how it looks in the picture any idea what would cause that? And how to help it?They are both in proper sunlight and get an ice cube every 10 days as directed. Thanks in advance!

Unknown markings on Paph. leaves

Hi everyone! I am still really new to orchids, and I need help. I have two paphiopedilums and they both have these markings on their leaves. Is it dehydration or something of the sort? Weather hasn't been too crazy lately and humidity has been I'd say around 70% on average. One of the orchids I got only a week ago and when I got it it didn't have these markings. Both are potted in bark with perlite. Info would be greatly appreciated :)

Aliens? by ingiebee, on Flickr

What the heck is growing out of the rhizome? It's not a root, it's got the beginnings of leaves, but this is a huge plant! Those things are almost as thin as a thread in spots (OK, I'm exagerating, but still.... Is this how big a new cane starts out? I can't believe it! If not, what is going on do you think?

Here is a closeup

closeup by ingiebee, on Flickr

This plant was traumatized with a drastic cutting out of a compacted pot, maybe it's small and unusual due to the trauma? It still has 5 big canes (well, 4 are big)

---------- Post added at 10:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:48 PM ----------

Thinking on it, I wonder if a seed fell in there and it just looks like it's growing from the rhizome? That's probably what it is, LOL. I'm going to leave it alone and see what it is :)

Bulbophyllum outside in Summer zone 5b

I am in the process of moving my Bulbophyllum outside for the summer, but I am a little concerned about the overnight lows. I am growing in Southern Ontario.

Occasionally, the temperature can drop down as low as approx. 12 degrees (lastnight) in the summer and then go back up to 25-30+ the next day (Celsius). I am mostly concerned with my warm/hot growers. Will they be ok outside if the night temperature drops low occasionally?

A list of some of the hotter growing Bulbos that I have:
Bulbophyllum macranthum
Bulbophyllum digoelense
Bulbophyllum gracillimum
Bulbophyllum grandiflorum

Does anyone have any experience growing Bulbos outside in these conditions? Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks much.

Oncidium Twinkle 'Fragrant Fantasy' with ginger

After purchasing from ebay more than 6 months ago, my small Oncidium Twinkle 'Fragrant Fantasy' has finally flowered.

When I first purchased it, it had no flower spike, and then it just developed a spike very soon after it arrived.

This plant has been growing nicely in scoria rock -- local variety is called quincan gravel (pronounced kwing-kun gravel). Scoria seems to work quite well here in North Queensland. This plant was originally growing in some kind of bark/perlite mix when it first arrived in the mail. I usually repot all plants that come in by mail.

At first, the early flowers didn't have much scent. But now, it has quite a nice subtle vanilla smell. I wasn't expecting a nice smell - but no problem at all on the nose!

The tag says 'Fragrance Fantasy', but I currently believe the correct name is supposed to be 'FragranT Fantasy'.

Hi all,

I was hoping to have this orchid species confirmed. I bought it from eBay some years ago as Vanda / Aerides Flabellata. It’s finally flowered with pure white scented flowers that are nothing like the google images shown for the assumed species...

Any definite ID would be greatly appreciated

Dan

Hi guys, I purchased a Renantanda Sunrise orchid 7 weeks ago. It was in loose bark mixed. However, the bark smelled like mold, so I took it out and leave it on top of the marbles in a glass cup (with some water to increase the moisture around the plant). It looks like the orchid is sufering bad. Is there anything I can do to help it recover? Thanks

Hello. I'm so glad I found this forum. I have 5 Phalaenopsis. I have managed to not kill them for years now and they bloom every year. I have one paphiopedilum Petula's Glory that I bought 3 years ago
From Orchids Limited. It's doing great and blooms for me every year.
Today I got a phragmipedium Incan Treasure (longifolium x kovachii)
Plus, a oncdiinae Burrageara Nelly Isler. I'm very excited however, nervous as hell. I have east and west windows. My lower level is in the 60s and the upper level is in the 70s. Where should I put my new family members?

Thanks:waving

Oncidium Damage/Infection from Attempted Murder

$

Hello! I'm new to forums and this site, so I hope I did this right! I have moderate experience with orchids, and this is not my only oncidium, but I'm not very well versed in their advanced care.

So, I live in an apartment with a couple of other girls, and I love to fill it with plants, especially orchids. Last year for my birthday I bought myself a beautiful Oncidium from an orchid place up in Los Angeles. I'm a college student, so dropping 40$ on an orchid was a big deal for me, and that oncidium, dubbed "Lava Boy" was super special. I spoke freely about how he was my "prize orchid" as a joke and everyone knew how much I loved him. One of these roommates, however, did not like me from the moment she met me and liked to make myself and others miserable just for the fun of it. Over the summer, I have gone home and hired a plant-sitter to come care for my plants in my place. When I left, Lava Boy was healthy, though he had gotten dehydrated, hence the younger leaves you see being kinked. But otherwise, he was strong, and I had adjusted my routine to rectify the dehydration. Today though, I get a text from my plant-sitter with these awful pictures! The Evil Roommate had come back and taken scissors to my Lava Boy! :bua: This wasn't the first time she had damaged my plants, but this one, in particular, had been targeted because she knew my love for it. She was the only one to have been in the apartment and my plant had been perfectly green and healthy before! I hadn't seen or spoken to her in months, and never retaliated against her, so I have no idea what prompted this attempted murder! The leaves have been cut down to the bulb, and much of the new growth, along with all of my mature leaves, have been violently sheared off. Unfortunately, my plant-sitter only comes once every few days and by the looks of it, the infection had already set into the wounds by the time I got there.

Is he salvageable? I got my plant-sitter to disinfect the wounds a bit with a water/alcohol mix since I didn't have cinnamon, hopefully alcohol is ok? But after that I'm at a bit of a loss as to what I can do. I've never seen someone be so brutal with a plant before, and the damage is so intense I worry my buddy is a goner. :( Help?
The picture with the flowers was when I first bought him, the second leafy one is right before I left a month ago, and the other two are pictures from today of the damage.

Dangers of underfeeding/under-fertilization?

$

Hello All,

I don’t know if this has been asked before, but I will take a chance that it hasn’t been.

There is a lot of information about the dangers of over fertilizing/overfeeding orchids, but what are the dangers of under-fertilizing?

Is feeding just a question of creating more flowers and more growth than average, or does it actually keep the plants alive?

I am asking this because I fertilize very little and for the past couple of months not at all as I have been in the process of relocating my collection.

Have I been done my plants great harm by neglecting to fertilize for the past couple of months?

Hello. I'm new here and just got an Incan Treasure (longifolium x kovachii) for my birthday. I wanting to know where I should put him. The upper level of my home is around the low to mid-70s; the lower level stays in the 60s. Both have east facing windows.

Thanks

UK rules and regulations

So this year I have been expanding my collection a bit which seems to be a good thing as I ordered another orchid from thailand but the seller has gotten in touch saying the UK has changed its import regulations and I would need proper documentation now.

I know nothing has changed till we actually leave the EU but if we do I've already been told I can't take my dog abroad without putting him in quarantine for 3 months and it seems buying orchids from abroad will be reserved to those with licenses and whatnot.

Not great. He doesn't want to send me my orchid :(

Repotting unknown hybrid

$

Ok, so I got this new orchid about 1 1/2 month ago, which is an unknown hybrid to me (the tag said Cambria, so that doesn't say much). I have to be honest and say that I've been purposefully trying not to buy any complicated hybrids (as I'm worried I wouldn't know how to care for them, bad experiences in the past, when they died). However this one I got from a, what do you call it... orchid grower? It's like a beautiful tropical park, and they've got huge nurseries and a store. Anyway, I was there with a group and we were leaving quickly and I sort of picked 2 orchids in a hurry (one should never do that LOL) thinking this one was an Oncidium (I'm familiar with Oncidiums and know what to do with that). The flower buds weren't open yet.

Anyway, so the thing is that I've almost only got Phalaenopsis orchids at home and I'm used to water them by submerging the pot for a couple of minutes in water. Well, so the thing about this one though is that I noticed that it would be soaked! After 7 days the skewer I'd put in it to check if it was dry would still come out wet. Green stuff was starting to form on the top layer. I was like: this can't be good. The flowers also well, they all bloomed (I only had one bud blast after bringing it home) but I had the idea that the flowers didn't last that long (well although I do not know how long the flowers on this one should last anyway, as I don't know what this hybrid is)...

So I decided to repot it, and I decided to treat it like an Oncidium. To my surprise the potting mix didn't look like anything I've even seen on an orchid. It hardly had any bark pieces at all. (See picture) Although I have to say the potting mix once I poured it out, it didn't look bad in the sense like it had gone bad. But I still went ahead and repotted it.

So what I got it repotted in now is the same stuff that I've got my Oncidium in, I mixed the separate components myself. I got small bark, spaghnum moss and perlite. Now using the little knowledge I have (and just a gut feeling) I figured if it was sitting in a very water retentive media, this is probably an orchid that doesn't like to dry out. So I added more spaghnum moss to this one that I did with the Oncidium.

Ok, so that's it... but now I'm wondering, did I do right? Should I not have repotted it? And now that I did, will this potting mix be appropriate? It did have some roots that had gone bad, so the soft mushy roots I got rid off. (See picture)
