Former serious hobbyist here. And I've been out of the game so long I've lost the ability to name a lot of genus I should recognize! Out of 3 I could only remember the
B. nodosa

Here's the first I'm looking to identify:

Self and Sib Crosses and their Hybrids

Having a PhD in one of the biological sciences, I think I have a good understanding about the actual genetics of living things, but the whole business of orchid hybrid nomenclature is something else, and here's my question:

I see that self- or sib- crosses of hybrids are typically noted as "x self" and "x sib." That part is simple. However, how do we keep track of the self/sib crossing when a "x self" or "x sib" is crossed with another plant to create a hybrid?

For example, if the name of the hybrid orchid A crossed with hybrid orchid B is already named hybrid orchid C, it is the case that hybrid orchid A x self (or x sib) crossed with hybrid orchid B an also be named hybrid orchid C?

Or are we discouraged to use self/sib crossed plants for crossings, to keep us from having this conundrum?

Furthermore, when a known crossing (crossing that already been named) results in 4N plants, do we still call that hybrid with the same name? How about the crosses of the 4N plants???

Also, for that matter, does the nomenclature system really distinguish between a division/mericlone vs. self/sibling/4N crosses?

Or do I have too much time on my hands???

I think this is my best flowering of this plant ever.
Didn't win anything major except the Best on Display at a recent show.

Potting media help

Hi all,

Could someone recommend a potting medium for my orchid? On a recent trip to Singapore’s national orchid garden I bought a small vial containing

Rhyncholaeliocattleya ‘Hausermann's Jade’ X Cattleya ‘Hausermann's Gala’

The packaging recommends 1:1 crushed brick and charcoal mix which I’ve tried to emulate with small sized hydroleca but it looks a little dry for my English climate...

Any advice much appreciated 😊

A tiny little plant with 15 flowers!

The plant was in a net basket and I mounted it on cork today. The flowers were removed in order to make the transition without stressing the plant:

I cannot remember the name of this Orchid if anyone can help I sure would appreciate

I had this orchid about 5 years ago and really loved it. It bloomed all of the time. Thank you for all of your help. I wish I could remember the name of this orchid.

Any idea if this is a spike on Bulbophyllum Fascinator? I also have 2 new growths after a long period of dormancy and adjusting (2 years).

I live in Singapore and it is practically summer all the time. Temperatures of 27 - 31 Degrees Celsius.

I read about enhancing plant growth with the introduction of mild electric current on plants. Also using magnetism to boost growth of plants.

Does anyone know with this will work to accelerate orchid growth?

2 keiki's growing - help please! :)

Hi! :waving

I'm looking for some advice on repotting 2 keiki's and their mother.

The 2 keiki's need to be removed from the other plant as they are getting quite big, but I'm unsure as to whether the mother plant is dying or not and if I should pot them all together in the same pot....

See pics, the mother plants middle is very dry and a tiny bit black, it does have really good roots and leaves are OK - will it be OK to pot with keiki's?

Thanks in advance for the advice! Attachment 138925

Repotting Colmanara Masai

I am wondering when I should repot my Colmanara Masai. When I received it in Oct. 2017 it had 3 pseudobulbs and was in bloom. Since that time I have repotted it several times, the last time being in Jan. 2019. The original pseudobulbs are shriveling now and one is turning yellow and has lost all its leaves. Meanwhile, I have lots of new growth with what appear to be the beginnings of at least two new pseudobulbs. Should I repot it now to remove the old pseudobulbs and before any further growth of new ones?

Blue vanda in bud

Hi,
My blue vanda is in bud now. Last year it didn’t bloom as it had a very poor root system but now it feels much better or so it seems and I am excited for its first home bloom. My question is what do I do to make sure it does not blast any of its buds. I soak it daily for at least 30 min in water. Firtilize once a week with 20-10-20 fertilizer diluted to 1/3 strength. My other vanda bloomed a few months ago and a few buds blasted but it had 9 flowers in total that opened up. Just want to make sure it does it’s best. Thanks!

New purchase: Very shriveled Oncidium

Hi everyone! I haven't been here in a long time. I need help with a new Oncidium I got 2 days ago.

My Oncidum is extremely shriveled, however is planted in Sphagnum Moss that is a little humid still. When I did purchase, I thought it didnt matter as plant would give more babies. But now I dont find normal that the base is that badly shriveled.

I read to not give water the first week or so but should I water, should I make ventilation hole in the soft plastic pot it came in?

Any suggestions is appreciated!!

Gur. Why Not potting question

I have a question on potting up a Gur (Ctna) Why Not seedling "bag baby". From my research I know that one of it's parent stock is a bifoliate which means its a fussy boots about having its roots disturbed. It has one an eye starting to develop now. Its this a type of Catt. that develops roots whilst the new growth is beginning to grow or do the roots appear after the new pbulb matures?

UK/ EU supplier of Macrobulbon section ?

$

Hi, I’m new to this site, so please excuse me if I’m posting this in the wrong forum (and let me know where it should go..). I'm currently based in London UK.

Does anyone know of any nurseries in the UK / EU that can supply any of the Bulbophyllum ‘Macrobulbon’ section (and also possibly B. beccarii) ? I’ve managed to source B. phalaenopsis, but I can’t locate any of the others.

There seem to be a number of places outside this geographical area that have at least some of these, but most of those that I’ve found don’t ship to the UK, and for those that apparently do I’m wary of falling foul of the paperwork needed for Import. There’s a place in Japan that will ship, and offers to take care of the Phytosanitary and CITES stuff, but they charge 300 $US for the that service, so it’s not really sensible money for just a handful of plants.

Thanks a lot, Bob W.
