Hello, I'm New

Hello Everyone,

I'm new here. I just bought 4 phalaenopsis orchids this week. I unfortunately have a terrible track record with any kind of plant. I've killed everything I've tried to grow (including some orchids), so I will probably be needing a lot of help

I'm excited to do much better this time around.

Odd leaf coloration?

I've got a fairly new to me P. Equesrtris. Yesterday, I noticed one leaf looking a little odd. While I took the pic, I then noticed a black spot, as well.

It is in rather bright light for a phal, but I don't think it's too much. Please help, I don't want to lose it!

Hi I'm new to this forum. I got this little guy at an orchid show. No idea what it is though. It's clearly not the common type I see everywhere in stores. Please ignore my horrible dirty table. Thank you

Dendrobium microchip x ??? in sphag moss

I am completely new to dendrobiums and saw this at a home depot while on vacation. I lost the tag and can not remember, although I know it was species.

Anyway, on the trip home the plant was not well secured and the pot fell over, basically unpotting the plant. I have had the orchid for a couple months now. The flowers have died off. I tried semi water culture until I had time and extra money to buy some bark. That has just not happened yet as I am a grad student and I'd rather eat than buy orchid bark.:rofl::rofl:

Anyway I had some sphag moss that I decide to pot up the orchid because I noticed a bit of rot on a pseudobulb. I think I had the water too high. I allow the sphag to dry out before watering again. I have noticed the rot stop, but read that dendrobiums do not do well in sphag. Is this true? Should I get some bark and mix with the sphag?

Late bloomer!

Is this as unusual as I think it is? My clowesia Rebecca Northern Mikabi woke up last week or so of June, she has a 1" growth and a lot of roots. Because the roots are pretty abundant, I put her, experimentally, in a self watering pot and gave her water. I know that's risky, but it's July people!!! 85-90 degrees here already! So I'm wondering if she'll grow faster than usual with this late start? She has, according to some sorces, over 8" total in roots, which seems unusual for her leaf size. I've been asking her to please wake up and grow since March, so I've gotten a bit impatient, LOL.

I actually bought a grapefruit pink because this one refused to take off and I needed a distraction to keep me from doing something stupid, LOL. I may still have done something stupid but we'll see???!!

I should have taken pictures of the roots before I set her in! ugh

Possible Vanda Keikis?

Hello all-

About a year ago I posted pictures of several Vandas I found suffering in a big box store, you gave me some great advice to get them back to health. All are doing well and this one is doing well, but in my opinion is the worst of the bunch. I should probably clean up the non-viable roots but it has lots of healthy roots and new growth on top looks good. Recently I noticed little leaves popping out at the bottom of the plant where the roots come from, are these keikis?

Thanks for your help-
Allison

I bought the HFGH 6x8 in So Cal

So I bought one. It's not up yet, I'm still trying to figure out where / how I'll set it up. My favorite spot is on a concrete slab, but how do you attach it? We always called the spot the "shuffle board" court though there is no sign the previous owners used it for that? It's next to the garden plot, which is only 13 x 13. I'd love to stick it on the dirt, but hubby would flip! LOL.

The other spot is very shaded, which would probably be OK here in So Cal. It's also farther from the house, which would make bringing electricity to it harder, and being shady may make solar harder.

So how do I attach it to a 60 year old HARD concrete slab that is uneven, sloped and cracked? And what do I do about a floor? How do I retain moisture if the floor is concrete?

So any ideas are welcome, but being that I'm not in the best of shape, the easiest and cheapest solutions will most likely be the best, LOL :D

This is my old friend Catt...:)
Never let me down so far, blooms twice a year.
This year, for the first time, is has two growths at the same time, in opposite directions, which is great.

The flowers are fragrant and they have a particularity, they change colors dramatically as they age (see bellow)

I purchased this plant a few months ago from Sundance Orchids. This is my first Dendrobium. I am learning of its care as I go along.

Oncidium Sharry baby snowflake leaf spots

I have just purchased this orchid online from a nursery in a different state, and noticed it has these snowflake-looking spots on the leaves. I have looked online, but I can’t find any photos of a similar spot. I’ve read that Sharry baby is prone to leaf spotting, but as the pattern of this looks like it’s spreading, I think it must be a pathogen of some sorts.

Any ideas on what sort of pathogen it is? And how to treat it?

What to do when you messed up things 😂

Hello!
About month ago, I've bought one phalaenopsis orchid that then was starting to blooms... Somewhere I read that when your orchid's roots turn silver, it's time for watering... Few weeks later, roots started to be brown at top, near corp of plant, but not squishy...Okay, it is probably started to rot, so, what now? Other strings of roots are fine, but a few are turning brown. Leaves seems fine, but flowers not so... There are some burgeons, but they don't blossom... What to do now, to go ahead with watering, to start, or to probably add some fertiliser?

Guarianthe sheath

Hi! I need your help! I have a Guarianthe and I was really happy when it started growing a sheath. However my happiness didn't last long as one day I found a small black stain on the sheath. In record time the stain has spread despite me cutting the damaged area, trying to stop the infection or whatever that was. It's slowly "eating" the sheath. I'm 100% sure water hasn't fallen in that area and I'm careful with the waterings. The roots are healthy and the rest of the plant is healthy. Does anybody know what this might be or what I might be doing wrong? Thank you for reading!

This is the link since I'm afraid the image won't show up:

Keikis growing from flower stem - what do I do?

Hello! I'm brand new to this board, so I'll introduce myself -- my name is Leah, and I'm a fairly new orchid owner. My phalaenopsis orchid is on its second cycle of blooming since I got it. I am in a basement apartment, so my window doesn't get any light, and it was starting to die, so I got a plant lamp. After a few weeks of using it, the orchid started to perk up and the leaves stopped drooping. I'm at two months of using the lamp and now my orchid has developed five keikis, four on the base of the new flower bloom and one at the root of the plant by the leaves (photo below). I did some research and found that keikis are baby orchids that will grow roots and leaves of their own, and that many orchid growers love keikis and even want them. They grow from stress on the plant, but not always -- there are lots of reasons. Is that information correct? I don't really know what to do about my orchid. Should I remove the keikis or let them grow? Is their location damaging? What is causing them and how do you suggest I change that, if I should? Thank you so much for your help!

Millenium Magic Monnierara HELP

$

Hello all,
I just recently purchased a Millenium Magic Monnierara on ebay for a great price! When it got here, it was completely dry, so i repotted it and watered it - BIG mistake, right? Well, i looked up the care for these orchids a bit too late and discovered about the dormancy and whatnot. There was a new growth with one root that was about a quarter-inch long, and the new growth rotted and the root tip turned brown. Is there any hope for my orchid? The old backbulb is still plump, but it is small. I took it out of medium and i currently have it in a container with no medium or lid. Does anyone have any ideas as to how i could stimulate a new shoot and let the roots get longer before watering? Any information you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated

Psychopsis Kalihi Alba Care

I have a Psychopsis Kalihi Alba and I have had it now for almost 7 years. First 5 years were great, same flower spike lasted and produced many, many blooms, for 5 years. A 2nd flower spike was sent up and and also did well, but didn't last as long. This winter the last flower spike finally died. I am not familiar with this genus and have researched quite a bit about it but I am not finding the information I need. I realized that in the 7 years I have had the orchid it only produced two new pseudobulbs*. One bulb started to send up a spike last year but aborted. This spring I noticed some new growths (sorry, no pictures, its dark out but I can provide some tomorrow) and since there were no longer any spikes remaining I decided to divide the orchid (I wanted to experiment with different light conditions and media) and repot them. One division is potted in a 50/50 bark and sphagnum moss mix and the other is more like 80/20 moss to bark. The 50/50 is getting a brighter amount of indirect light as opposed to the 80/20. Both are growing new bulbs, one division (80/20) has 3 new growths that are bigger than the other division. However, the 2nd division (50/50) also has 3 new growths but are smaller. Sorry for the long story but here are my questions

*1. How often do psychopsis orchids send out new pseudobulbs? 2 new bulbs in 7 years seems weird but then again it was in spike during that time. After dividing the orchid and the spikes were gone I have 6 new growths total (THATS MORE THAN THE PAST 7 YEARS).

2. The new bulbs are taking FOREVER to grow, are psychopsis normally very slow growers?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I apologize in advance for any typos or errors (the scotch is good tonight). I will try and get photos tomorrow if needed/requested.

Schoenorchis fragrans lost all its leaves- what happened???

I've had a cute little Schoenorchis fragrans for about a year now and it seemed very happy. This morning I went to check on it when watering, touched it to remove a speck of dirt on a leaf... and all the leaves fell off! :_( :_(

A bit more information:
The leaves were perfectly green, no sign of rot at the base.
Plant is mounted, and mount hangs in a small mason jar with some leca and water at the bottom for humidity. I used to close the jar part of the day in the first months I had it, but now it stays open.
I mist the roots daily, being careful to not get the plant wet.

The only leaf still attached is the newly growing one. Since the roots are nice, I'm hoping it will bounce back...
