:hello: Good afternoon members, I would like to thank everyone who gave me suggestions to my last thread "Browning & Blackening of leaves", I have taken some of
your ideas and put them into action. I did a full watering & fertilizing on Sunday, I continue to water communally (if you saw my set-up you would see why I do watering communally), but, this time I watered my problem plants separately, let's see what happens. Zoren....:bowing

Any way to guide a horizontally growing Catt growth?

Title says it all, photo shows it all. I noticed this a bit too late, do you have suggestions on how to gently guide this growth into a more normal orientation? I don't have much experience with Catts so don't know how bendy these are.

Hola from Costa Rica

I’m new to orchids, and I have a umcidium with spots on pseudobulbs. Can someone please tell me what the problem may be. It will be greatly appreciated.

Ants as Allies

I'm a beginner but I figured this was an advanced question. basically I'm looking for information about orchids such as those belonging to the Myrmecophila genus who have a mutualistic relationship with ants. My husband is an entomologist and we were playing with the idea of creating a terrarium to explore this.

Does anyone keep these orchids? do you keep them with ants? What is your set up like?

Did anyone else go to the closing sale of Carib Orchids in Homestead several weeks ago? I bought about 14 plants, but now wished I would have bought more. :(

... or Rhyncattleanthe?

This one's a reliable bloomer. While many of my Cattleya are suffering from the heat and humidity here... nothing ever seems to bother this one.

It always starts to flower when I leave for vacation...

What is this structure?

I purchased this Better Gro "Bag baby" labeled Cth Tzeng-Wen Free "Golden Phoenix" yesterday at Lowe's. It has two new growths on it but it also has this structure. Is it a misshapen bulb that grew without leaves or is it something else?

Oncidium potted in dirt?

I recently picked up this Oncidium Sweet Sugar at a big box store and although it’s obviously doing very well with its huge flower spike and new growths it looks like it’s potted in mostly dirt. Is this ok?

Ultimately, what is more important; humidity or airflow??

$

So I've got a number of my tropical orchids in a 75gal tank. I'm running a 400w HPS over it. For humidity, I've got 3 inches of hydrotone pellets and water, as well as a reptile fogger. Temp is routinely 80-85°.

Currently, I'm running 2 smallish fans. One inside the terrarium, the other on top drawing in fresh air. The rest of the terrarium is enclosed with glass.

If I stop running the top fan, I'm able to get the humidity very high, at least in the 70-80% range. If I run both, I can keep the humidity in the 50-60% range, sometimes higher. But, often it drops as low as 30%. It takes a little bit of watering to keep over 40%.

So, ultimately, which is better for the orchids? Higher humidity and less airflow (but still some), or higher airflow with a little lower humidity?

Den spectable spots

$

I brought this Dendrobium spectable home from the nursery last weekend. There is a large soft spot on one of the leaves and some small brown spots on another leaf. It was in a greenhouse when I bought it, now it is outside with a little morning sun (1 hour).

I haven’t watered since I bought it, and I do not think these were on the plant when I bought it.

Any idea what’s going on?

It’s also taking over its own pot, and I was planning on reporting this weekend. Should I still plan on that?

Inorganic Mounts for Orchids

$

In a recent thread on Ghost orchids a couple of contributors said that it is possible to use inorganic mounts for orchids. I like the idea of long lasting mounts and once tried to grow Sarcochilus falcatus (an epiphytic orchid native to Australia) on the outside of terracotta "jug". I filled the "jug with moist sphagnum moss for moisture retention. Did not persist far with the trial as I became concerned that the clay may exude salts that are toxic to the plant.

Questions that come to mind include: what minerals can leach out of terracotta one has to be wary of?, can these be removed by pre-soaking the pot?, what other mineral mounts have been tried? How do inorganic mounts compare with cork?

Hairy white mold on vanda roots.

$

I have a vanda I purchased at Kroger by Silvervase. It is a vase setup, which I am planning to improve over the next few days. In the meantime, I found that the roots have some hairy, white mold on them.

I sprayed them yesterday with 3%hydrogen peroxide. But here they are again this morning! What do you guys think about this? The vanda itself doesn't show any signs of distress right now. Is it even a harmful mold? If so, what should I use to get rid of it?

Thanks in advance!

Just a little display

The wife and I picked up a couple of these planter stands, and it came with a small 3 pot setup. Got the idea to plant up some mini phals.

There are actually 2 of the variegated phals in the bottom pot; only 1 is in bloom right now.

Epidendrum Pacific Sizzle & Dendrobium lindleyi...

What type of shade cloth is best for my situation

$

Hello All,

I am currently furnishing my greenhouse for my orchids and was wondering if anyone knew what shade cloth would be best for me.

I have Phals, Cattleya/Brassavola, Soft cane Dendrobiums, Paphs, and a few Angraecums.

The greenhouse is 6mm twin wall polycarbonate and it is situated in mostly sun (all day). The longest sides of the greenhouse face North and South and the West side sun is partly blocked by my house

I live in southern NY (only a few miles north from NYC). The max temp in summer is about 100F with high humidity (70-100%) and most of the summer is around 86-90F.

I have tried putting my phals in the greenhouse only to have them get badly burned so I definitely need something.

Would 70% shade be too much? This is the cloth I ordered but I could still easily return it.

PS: the plants will be very near to the walls.
