What to do if roots are rotten?

$

Hi my name is Linda and I am very new to the orchid world but recently became interested in them, so today I joined this forum, as I seem to be struggling!
I had an orchid in lava rock to try and prevent the roots from having problems because it had actually gotten snow mold while potted in a previous medium. So I switched it to lava rock per someone's suggestion. But now I am realizing the roots are rotting so I am going to try and eventually convert it to the water method! Right now I have it bagged with a small amount of water in the bottom of a glass vase with some rocks at the bottom for structural support. I don't have any sphag moss though. Do you think I will still be able to save it? Should I add anything else to the inside of the vase or the water? Should I keep the bag around it all the time or ever let it air out? I really appreciate any help or suggestions!!! I will try to attach a picture of it in its current situation too! Thanks so much!

These flowers are in bloom right now, from a plant that I bought only yesterday from an orchid sales event. The colours are quite nice when the illumination is good. Darker burgandy dark-reddish chocolatey colours when surrounding illumination is less.

The tag says Jewel Red, so I'm trusting it's the correct order --- not Red Jewel heheh.

Husband's out of town, the dogs are fed, and I haven't posted in a while, so here are some of what's blooming in beautiful Hawaii.

This is a very large plant, blooming this year with three spikes and 7 flowers, which are 6-7 inches across. It was hard getting an angle to show the entire plant. The plant at its widest is about 30 inches across. I got this one several years ago from Orchid Eros. I especially love the white edging along the bottom of the lip.

A classical japanese variety. It blooms with crystalline white flowers with deep purple throat.

Earlier this year, I was quite disappointed when every one of the buds showed sign of being keikies, and when they grew roots it was kind of big let down...but surprise! They changed their mind (?) and finally ended up as flower spikes...with roots hanging down like beard!

Cattleya General Pau semi-alba

Cattleya General Pau is a primary hybrid between C. labiata and C. lueddemanniana. The parents are supposedly tipo, so they both might have had semi-alba genes.
Got this as a seedling in November 2017 and grew it indoors under lights. This is its first bloom and it has another bud developing in the sheath. The flower is 20 cm (8") across, a giant in my book.

I do have some doubts, could this actually be a semi-alba gaskelliana? I never had a gaskelliana bloom, as they are still young so I have nothing to compare with.

Cypripedium pod

Hey,

I've got a few Cypripedium in the balcony.
I just decided to stick some Paphiopedilum pollen in one flower to test it out.
A pod has been developing for the last month already.
Of course i can't be 100% if isn't just coincidence. Maybe it got pollinated by one of the other flowers.

1. Can Cypripedium and paphiopedilum even crossbreed?
2. Can the seed germinate in soil?
3. Is it more likely for the symbiotic fungi to exist in mulch?

Gorgeous medium sized floofy blooms. A very unusual color, and it definitely looks different than it was advertised on Akatsuka.

That being said I love Akatsuka. They are pricey but the quality is very good. I haven't received any unhealthy plants from them yet.

Plant height is 10 inches including the pot.

I'm surprised that this bloomed because the growths were very stunted this time around. It bloomed on a very long Spike with 9 flowers.

This is a really ridiculously big plant. The growths are around 2 feet long.

Is this stem rot?

I am new to orchids. Before I start building a collection, I'm trying to save my nearly drowned phalaenopsis.

Does this look like stem rot? It is not squishy at all. Should I remove the yellow leaf and cut off the bottom part of the stem that is almost black even though it is not squishy?

Thanks for your help and these great forums!!

Neofinetia Raikoumaru and Choukou

Just as Shojou and Shutennou are frequently associated, Neo hybrids Raikoumaru and Choukou are also associated, in this case by their solidly colored sepals versus just the colored highlights of the first pair, and being marketed in the US concurrently.

However Raikoumaru and Choukou have substantial differences, with the former being generally considered more desirable as reflected in its being priced twice as much. Raikoumaru is a smaller more compact plant with a more compact display of blooms.

Both are well worth growing unless you are a purist and only want pure neos and no Neo hybrids which is fine but you are really missing out on some great plants. Also being a purist is pretty hard to do as you cannot rely on the Meikan as years ago the background investigations for registration were not as stringent as today allowing for some Neo hybrids to be registered, examples being Shojou and Shutennou.

The first is Raikoumaru followed by two pictures of Choukou

Fertilizer Expiration?

$

Hey all,

Does fertilizer expire? I bought some MSU RO, the hard grainy kind that dissolves in water, two years ago. I've noticed that over time it started to harden and lose it's color. It was originally very sky blue, now is lighter and there's some browning within the bag. I've also noticed that once mixed the solution is clear where it was once light blue.

The bag has always stayed sealed when not in use and squeezed to remove any excess air, while stored in a cool and dry cabinet. Still safe to use or should I chuck it?

Thanks.

I got this plants from a local orchid nursery where some seedlings were available.
Since the colors are not so bright, only some enthusiastic amateurs have the orchids.
